The UEFA Champions League second round of matches concluded on Wednesday night and arguably the greatest competition in the world produced some more brilliant football. GOAL A: Alvaro NEGREDO, MANCHESTER CITY v Bayern Munich
Even the staunchest Blue would concede Manchester City were thoroughly outplayed in every area of the field on Wednesday night. Whisper it quietly, but Pep Guardiola may just have achieved the impossible in making Bayern Munich even better than the all-conquering class of last season. For an hour they were simply unplayable and City's fans were gracious enough to concede the fact in their generous applause. The one beacon of light on an evening in which neither Joe Hart nor Manuel Pellegrini covered themselves in glory was City's consolation goal - ironically the best of the night. Many believe Alvaro Negredo should have started the game and it was a school of thought vindicated when the second-half substitute made a yard of space just inside the box from David Silva's pass, via the cutest of turns that left Dante flummoxed. His next touch was even more exquisite as he bent the most sumptuous of efforts into the far corner with his left peg. Martin Tyler summed it up thus: "There's something from this tortuous night for City to remember."
GOAL B: Kostas MITROGLOU, Anderlecht v OLYMPIAKOS
There is little doubt over who stole the player of the night gong. Kostas Mitroglou ran riot in Anderlecht as his hat-trick secured Olympiakos an eye-catching 3-0 success on their travels. The Greece international will have few better nights in his career as he proved a persistent thorn in the side of an admittedly at times powder-puff Anderlecht backline. His third goal, fittingly, was his finest. It was counter-attacking football at its very best that created the chance. After an Anderlecht free-kick was fired straight into the wall, Olympiakos broke with power and pace. Within two passes the ball was worked to Mitroglou, 25-yards out, and after rolling it from his left foot to right, he unleashed the proverbial thunderbolt into the top corner with arching precision. Absolute beauty.
GOAL C: Jens HEGELER, BAYER LEVERKUSEN v Real Sociedad
If there's been a better free-kick scored this season than Jens Hegeler's last-gasp winner for Bayer Leverkusen it's escaped our attention. With the game tied at 1-1 at the BayArena with 90 minutes up on the clock, Leverkusen substitute Hegeler knew as he lined up his set-piece 30-yards from goal that this was last chance saloon. To attempt to describe what happened next when the ball left his right boot in this small space would be to try and sum up Scarlett Johansson's appeal in 50 words.
