Fernandinho featured under former coach Mano Menezes - making the last of his five appearances for Brazil so far in 2012 - and he had been hoping to impress current boss Luiz Felipe Scolari with his form for City.
The 28-year-old has obviously caught Scolari's eye despite missing the last two games due to injury and the former Chelsea boss has selected him for the final friendly before he announces his 23-man World Cup squad on May 7.
Chelsea quartet David Luiz, Ramires, Oscar and Willian have also been included in the 16-man squad along with Tottenham midfielder Paulinho and QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Among the absentees are Liverpool duo Lucas Leiva and Philippe Coutinho, Robinho, Kaka, Hernanes and Maicon.
Scolari will add a number of players from Brazilian clubs to the squad ahead of the match at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg on March 5.
Squad: Cesar, Luiz, Dante, Thiago Silva, Alves, Marcelo, Rafinha, Gustavo, Paulinho, Fernandinho, Ramires, Oscar, Willian, Hulk, Bernard, Neymar.
