Transfer news: Boca Juniors cool interest in Sunderland striker Ignacio Scocco

Nacho Scocco: Sunderland striker linked with return to Argentina

Sunderland striker Ignacio Scocco's chances of joining Boca Juniors have receded after he talked up a return to Newell’s Old Boys.

Scocco failed to start a single Premier League game for Gus Poyet’s side after arriving for £3.2million in January and has been linked with a move back to Argentina.

Boca club president Daniel Angelici admitted his manager Carlos Bianchi is interested in the 29-year-old, who is known as "Nacho", but said they were not impressed with his comments about joining their rivals.

Angelici said: "Scocco was in Bianchi's thoughts, but we did not like to read in the media stating that he prefers to play for Newell's."

Earlier this month, the player, who has two years left on his contract, stated a return to the club where he began his career would be his preference.

He said: "If you ask me, I'll obviously tell you that I want to play for Newell's."

River Plate are also rumoured to have an interest Scocco, although it remains to be seen if any of his potential suitors can come up with the finances to broker a deal.

Scocco was drafted in by Poyet as he looked to reinforce his misfiring striking department in order to boost the Black Cats' fight for Barclays Premier League survival.

However, he managed only eight senior appearances and he is yet to open his goalscoring account for Sunderland.

Ultimately, it was England Under-21 international Connor Wickham who provided the impetus after being recalled from his loan spell at Leeds.

Wickham was named Premier League Player of the Month for April after scoring three goals in three days as Sunderland secured a draw with Manchester City and beat Chelsea to gain four vital away points which sparked their revival.
