Both Greece and Bulgaria topped their qualification groups for the European Championship in the summer but it was the former that emerged victorious.
A noisy Athens crowd roared on their heroes, as they showed that they can not be underestimated in Portugal with a hard fought victory.
Former Burnley star Dimitri Papadopoulos capped a fine performance with the opening goal, sweeping home on 26 to give his side the lead, after the ball fell kindly for him in the box.
Papadopoulos has flourished since leaving England to return to Greece with Panathinaikos scoring 10 in 17 domestically, and underlined his credentials for a place in the Greece Euro 2004 squad after making the starting line-up.
Fiorentina's prolific Greek striker Zivis Vryzas doubled the advantage after the break, converting a pinpoint Vassilis Tsiartascross and his 61st minute goal wrapped up the scoring for the night.
