Juan Carlos Valeron's goal on the hour mark condemned Russia to a narrow loss in the Euro 2004 meeting in Faro.
Yartsev was initially not too disheartened with the reverse to Spain but, on reflection, has castigated the performance of CSKA Moscow midfielder Gusev.
He was the first Russian player to be booked and was then substituted at half time by Yartsev following his ineffectual display in the match.
The Russia chief suggested that Gusev was not fit enough to do himself justice and feels his team-mates had to compensate for his lack of sharpness.
"Gusev was poor," commented Yartsev. "You find before games that people can say they are okay but in the match it does not happen.
"That is the case here. He made mistakes and others were booked trying to rectify the situation."
Yartsev was also upset with his midfielders, who he accused of failing to carry out his instructions against the Spanish.
Russia deployed Dmitri Bulykin as a lone striker and Yartsev was fuming that his midfielders did not support the young hot shot.
He added: "I was happy with the way Bulykin played, I was just surprised that my midfield players did not get forward to support him.
"I don't know why that was but I intend to ask them."
