Lennon swoops to lure Irish midfielder from Hamilton

St Mirren have made their first signing of the winter transfer window by securing the services of Jim Goodwin. The Irish midfielder has signed a six-month deal with the Scottish Premier League outfit after leaving Hamilton. The 29-year-old joined Accies in September on a short-term deal, which expired after their goalless draw against Motherwell on New Year's Day. Goodwin has made 14 appearances for Accies this term and had opened talks over a new agreement until the end of the season but has instead opted to link up with fellow strugglers St Mirren. Danny Lennon's men are currently five points and one place above rock-bottom Hamilton, although the Accies have two games in hand. Goodwin came through the Celtic academy and made one first-team appearance before heading south to play for Stockport, Scunthorpe and then Huddersfield, who released him in the summer. The one-cap Republic of Ireland international could be involved in the Saints' Scottish Cup fourth-round tie at home to Peterhead on Saturday.
