Goalkeeper Mark Brown is hoping to earn a contract at Southend United after admitting Hibernian are currently unable to make him an offer.
Brown's deal at Hibs has expired, but the SPL club's financial situation means that the keeper is having to explore other options and accepted a late invitation to feature in Southend's friendly against Braintree Town on Saturday.
He kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win and Brown is now determined to make the most of his opportunity to convince Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock to offer him a deal.
"I trained on Friday morning with a friend of mine who manages a Scottish First Division team," Brown told Southend's official website.
"When I turned my phone on after that there was a message from my agent asking if I wanted to come down for a trial with Southend.
"Hibs have said they want to keep me but they can't make me an offer at the moment so I have got to look after myself.
"I have had the chance to come down south before but it has never worked out but hopefully this time it might."
