Sky Sports understands Chris Atkinson is being tracked by a number of clubs after being released by Huddersfield.

The 22-year-old graduated from Huddersfield’s academy system in 2010 but only made 10 professional appearances in a four-year stint with the club.

During that period Atkinson spent time on loan with Darlington, Chesterfield, Tranmere Rovers and Bradford City before becoming a free agent in May.

League One sides Crewe Alexandra, Rochdale and Port Vale, as well as Andy Awford’s Portsmouth in League Two, are all thought to be monitoring the midfielder.

The Halifax-born Atkinson impressed at the start of the 2012/13 season, scoring five times in 15 appearances for Chesterfield to earn a recall from Huddersfield and went on to claim his only Championship goal in a Yorkshire derby against Leeds United in December.

Atkinson spent all the 2013/14 season in League One, initially with Tranmere before joining Bradford during the January transfer window, making a combined 26 appearances in the English third tier.
