Transfer news: Wigan boss Uwe Rosler looking to strengthen midfield and attack

Uwe Rosler says he is still keen to bolster the Wigan Athletic squad in midfield and attack before the new season.
Rosler has already made five signings this summer but a number of players are currently sidelined due to injury, with Shaun Maloney, Ben Watson, Chris McCann and James McArthur all in the treatment room and new recruit Don Cowie still working on his fitness.
The Latics boss is therefore actively seeking reinforcements and has identified the areas he wants to strengthen ahead of the Championship campaign, which kicks off with a clash against Reading on 9th August.
“I think when you look at the situation, especially with the long-term injuries, it’s clear there is room to do something,” Rosler told the Wigan Evening Post.
“I’m looking at the midfield and also central striking positions, and we will continue to look for options there.
“Whether that will be permanent signings or loans for six or 12 months, we will have to wait and see.”
Rosler admits the injury situation is frustrating, with McArthur having taken longer to recover from a calf problem than expected and Maloney suffering a calf strain on the recent tour of Germany.
“I would be more satisfied if the midfield situation was looking a little bit healthier, if we had more players available,” he said.
“But sometimes you have to deal with things and that is the case at the moment. I had hoped James coming back from his holiday would have been ready by now, but he needs a little bit more time to recover. What happened with Shaun was unfortunate, but that can happen in the game at any time.
“Don Cowie has come in but he is a little bit behind the others and we don’t want to risk him in a game too early.
“In general he is in good shape and I think he will be available for the Rochdale game next weekend.”
