Bournemouth and Sunderland are competing to sign former Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzman, Sky sources understand.

Representatives of the Premier League new boys are heading to Italy for further talks with the 27-year-old, who joined Serie A side Napoli at the start of the 2014-15 season.

It is understood De Guzman, who has won 14 caps for the Netherlands to date, has a buyout clause in his contract of £4.4m, but it is not yet clear whether Bournemouth are looking to sign him on a permanent or loan deal.

However, their deal could be complicated by interest from Sunderland, who Sky Italia are reporting have agreed a £1m deal with Napoli to loan De Guzman for a season with an obligation to buy.

When asked about Sunderland's interest, De Guzman's agent Fabian Parisi told Italian radio Kiss Kiss: "It's true there's an agreement for the player to go on loan with a purchase option included for the English club, but we are all working towards finding a solution for De Guzman, who is not in the plans of (Napoli coach Maurizio) Sarri for this season.

"Sunderland is there and so is Marseille and there are other options. We will choose the best option for us and for Napoli.

"Jonathan is an attractive player in the transfer market and we will need a few more days to decide."
