Werder Bremen have extended Assani Lukimya's contract until 2017, the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday.

The defender's previous contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but he has impressed enough since joining the club from Fortuna Dusseldorf in 2012 to earn a new deal.

"I feel a lot of faith from the club and a lot of respect too," said the Congolese defender. "I like the relaxed way people work here and you can see that things are progressing step by step.

"I'm delighted that I will also be part of this team. My aim is to carry on improving, together with the team."

The 28-year-old has made 46 appearances in two seasons for Bremen, scoring two goals.

He previously played for Hertha Berlin's reserves before joining Dusseldorf, making 70 appearances for them before making the step up to the Bundesliga.
