Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has cooled the prospect of bringing Nyron Nosworthy back to Bramall Lane due to financial restrictions.
The Sunderland defender spent a chunk of last season on loan with the Blades and it was thought Blackwell was keen on bringing the experienced schemer back to South Yorkshire for another spell in the Championship.
But it looks as though Nosworthy's wages will prevent the 29-year-old centre-back from adding to his 19 appearances in United colours.
"At this moment in time the finance will be too great for us to do a deal," said Blackwell, who has released a host of first-team players in the close season.
"There is no doubt that Nyron was well respected during his time here, not just by the players and the staff, but also by the fans, which is important.
"It would have been a big signing if we could have done it but at this moment he is probably out of our reach."
Blackwell is more optimistic midfielder Stephen Quinn will sign a new deal at the club.
Quinn is out of contract this summer but Blackwell is hoping he will follow in the footsteps of Chris Morgan, Nick Montgomery and Richard Cresswell and commit himself to the club.
"This summer is almost as much about getting a core into the team signed up and stable for a few years as it is about bringing new players in," added the Blades boss.
"Stephen is a very wholehearted player, versatile and knows all about us, so if he stays it will help us put in place a strong core of what I consider to be real Sheffield United players."
