Daggers boss wanted home start

Image: Wayne Burnett: Facing long trip on opening day

Wayne Burnett admits he would have preferred Dagenham to have been at home on the opening day of the new season.

The Daggers will make one of their longest journeys of the League Two calendar on August 3 when they make the 526-mile round trip to Fleetwood Town, where they went down 2-1 last term. But Burnett admits he was "relatively happy" with how the fixtures have panned out over the course of the campaign. Reflecting on the opening-day trip, he told Daggers Player: "It's a long way. It takes me back to last season when we went a goal up and then Chris Lewington decided to throw one in and then he got injured and Jordan Seabright came on and did very, very well. "It's going to be a tough game but we've got to play them all so why not get Fleetwood over and done with. "It would have been nice to have started at home. You always want a home fixture to get off on the right foot but it's not meant to be. We play York the following Saturday and by the end we'll play 23 at home and 23 away." The Daggers are back in for the start of pre-season training on Thursday as they look to avoid the relegation dogfight they found themselves embroiled in last term. "I can't wait, I'm excited to be working with the players," added Burnett, who admits he is in no rush to add new faces just yet amid what is a quiet transfer market as all parties weigh up their finances. "Things are going to change slightly, we're going to have a few different ideas and do things slightly differently, implement one or two things. "I think the players are keen to get back too, we've spoken to one or two of them."
