Roche regret at Fenton exit

Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche concedes Nick Fenton's departure will be keenly felt by the League Two club.

Fenton was released at the weekend with his contract set to expire in the summer and a calf injury ruling the former Manchester City, Grimsby and Rotherham defender out of the Shrimps' remaining fixtures this term. Boss Jim Bentley wanted to keep the 33-year-old but financial constraints at the Globe Arena meant a renewed deal was not possible. "It's a massive loss, both on and off the pitch," Roche admitted. "He's a very popular member of the squad, as the gaffer said. "He's a big, loud presence in the dressing room and he's been a really, really consistent performer for us week in, week out. "So it's a massive loss for us but unfortunately that's football. We knew that the budget would be cut and that there would be casualties. "It's very, very unfortunate from his point of view and for us that he's one of them."
