Valencia were unable to break down Gimnastic away from home and had Jonas sent off in the closing stages of a goalless stalemate, leaving them with plenty of work to do at the Mestalla to secure a place in the last 16.
Segunda Division side Jaen also impressed in a 2-2 draw at home to Espanyol, coming from behind after David Lopez opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time.
A Sidnei own goal drew the hosts level and Jozabed put Jaen in front on the 70-minute mark, before Christian Stuani levelled late on.
Almeria enjoyed greater success against a side from the second tier as they prevailed 3-1 in the first leg of their clash with Las Palmas.
The damage was done inside the opening 25 minutes as Oscar Diaz netted twice and Aleix Vidal also found the target.
Nauzet scored midway through the second half to give Las Palmas hope but was then sent off, while Almeria were also reduced to ten men when Christian was given his marching orders.
Osasuna staged a great comeback against Malaga as the two Primera Liga sides shared six goals in a 3-3 thriller.
Sergio Sanchez and Vitorino Antunes struck before half-time and Juanmi then made it 3-0, before Osasuna came roaring back thanks to goals from Roberto Torres, Manuel Onwu and Emiliano Armenteros.
An Odion Ighalo double put Granada in control of their tie against Alcorcon with a 2-0 victory away from home.
