Highly-rated forward keen on Ajax style
Utrecht forward Dries Mertens has fuelled speculation of a summer move to Ajax by insisting he would suit the club's style of play.
The 23-year-old Belgian was heavily linked with a switch to the Dutch giants in January, but the move fell through after the two clubs failed to negotiate a price.
Despite that setback, Mertens has made it clear he is still interested in joining the Amsterdam club, likening their attacking approach to his own after watching their Europa League victory over Anderlecht last week.
He told
NUsport: "I watched Ajax against Anderlecht and saw a great Ajax team.
"They play the attacking football that I like to play. I think I would fit."
However, Mertens' compatriot and close friend Nacer Chadli, who plays for Ajax's fierce rivals FC Twente, feels the forward would be better matched to the Spanish league.
Chadli said: "I know that Dries wants to go to Ajax, but I think he is better suited to a great Spanish team, one that has much more movement in the game.
"La Liga is all about technique."
