Inter Milan suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to Chievo on the opening weekend of the new Serie A season.
A second-half double by Chievo's Valter Birsa made it a night to forget for Inter's new boss Frank de Boer, installed by the club's Chinese owners after they fell out with De Boer's predecessor Roberto Mancini.
Overall, it was a positive weekend for champions Juventus, who beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Saturday and were then able to watch some of their major rivals struggle 24 hours later.
Napoli, second to Juve last season, had to come from two goals down to earn a point at Serie A newcomers Pescara while AC Milan needed a last-minute penalty save to hang on for a 3-2 win over Torino.
Colombian striker Carlos Bacca struck a hat-trick for Milan but it took an injury-time penalty save by 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to secure the three points for Vincenzo Montella's side after Torino mounted a stoppage-time fightback.
Still reeling from the loss of 36-goal striker Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus, Napoli looked out of sorts as Ahmad Benali and Gianluca Caprari gave newly promoted Pescara a two-goal lead at the interval.
Belgian winger Dries Mertens rescued a point for the visitors with two well-taken goals in the space of three minutes around the hour mark.
Roma top the first table of the season thanks to their 4-0 win over Udinese, with Diego Perotti scoring twice from the penalty spot and Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah also on target.
Lazio edged a hugely entertaining game at Atalanta 4-3.
The Biancocelesti looked like strolling to a comfortable victory as goals from Ciro Immobile, Wesley Hoedt and Cristiano Lombardi gave them a three-goal cushion going into half-time.
However, Atalanta rallied after the break and two quick goals from Franck Kessie put the hosts right back in contention with over 25 minutes to play.
Danilo Cataldi extended Lazio's lead in the final minute to secure the three points for Simone Inzaghi's team but Andrea Petagna struck in injury time to ensure the winning margin was just the solitary goal.
Sampdoria won 1-0 at Empoli thanks to a 37th-minute goal from Luis Muriel while Mattia Destro's late strike gave Bologna victory over Crotone.
A penalty from Domenico Berardi earned Sassuolo a 1-0 win at Palermo, who had Slobodan Rajkovic sent off late on.
Genoa scored three times in the last 12 minutes to come from behind and beat Cagliari 3-1.
Marco Borriello gave the visitors the lead in the 66th minute, only for Olivier Ntcham, Diego Laxalt and Luca Rigoni to reply.
