Super sub hails victory as 'unbelievable'

Dirk Kuyt was delighted to have finally claimed a major trophy as Liverpool ended their six-year drought by winning the Carling Cup in an error-strewn penalty decider against Cardiff. The Merseysiders just about held their nerve, prevailing 3-2 on spot-kicks after the two sides had finished locked at 2-2 after a thrilling period of extra-time. The win was Liverpool's first trophy since their FA Cup triumph in 2006, and the first since Kop legend Kenny Dalglish returned as manager last year. And Holland international Kuyt told Sky Sports: "It's unbelievable. I've been here almost six years at the club and I've got my first trophy now. "I feel really proud and you know it was a hard game and to finish it off with the penalties was incredible. We won it, so that's the most important thing." Liverpool had seemed poised to claim victory after substitute Dirk Kuyt fired the Premier League giants 2-1 ahead after 108 minutes but Cardiff snatched a late leveller from centre-half Ben Turner with just two minutes remaining.

Importance

And asked about the contrasting emotions, the Dutchman said: "It was unbelievable. But I came on with only 15 minutes remaining, so that was disappointing for me but you have to put disappointments aside because the trophy is much more important. "I think 30 seconds before the final whistle, I cleared the ball off the line, then another corner came in which was deflected and they scored but you have to keep believing and I think we did. "I came to Anfield to win trophies and to finally win one is something really, really special."
