Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic has announced his retirement from international football with Croatia.

Jelavic confirmed his time with the national team was over on Saturday after he was overlooked for Friday night's European Qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia, a game Croatia won 1-0.

The 29-year-old played 36 times for his country, scoring six goals.

According to the Croatia FA website, Jelavic told coach Niko Kovac of his decision after the squad arrived back in Vukovar, where they will take on Azerbaijan on Monday.

Kovac was disappointed by Jelavic's announcement but wished him well for his future career.

He said: "I have to admit that Jelavic surprised me and I am sorry to hear about his decision.
