Saints stopper eager for chance to shine

Southampton defender Danny Butterfield is eager to seize any chance that comes his way if manager Nigel Adkins throws him into the fray. The Saints have made a blistering start to the new campaign, but Butterfield has seen Frazer Richardson claim the right-back role to date. The former Crystal Palace stopper has featured twice in Carling Cup action this term and has found things difficult waiting in the wings. However, he is not letting his head drop and is determined to shine once he is called upon by Adkins in the coming months.

Difficult

"As professionals we all want to play for 90 minutes so if you are on the bench then to make an impact every minute is crucial for you to impress," he told the club's official website. "So everyone is champing at the bit to be playing every single minute of every game, which is only good for the manager and for the club. "Especially, with the start we have made to the season, it's difficult for some players to wait for their chances, but when that chance comes you have to take it with both hands because you can't afford not to be as fit as the lads who are playing regularly. "It's a squad game and I am sure everyone will be used at some point of the season, so it's important that we are all at peak fitness."
