Malaga have appointed Marcelo Romero as their new manager to replace Juande Ramos.

Ramos left his job on Tuesday by mutual consent after a poor run of results with just one win in seven games heading into 2017.

Former Uruguay international Romero steps up after three years on Malaga's technical staff. He coached the first team for three months last season when manager Javi Gracia was suspended.

Ramos' position had been in doubt after owner Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani tweeted farewell to the Spanish boss after their exit from the Copa del Rey to second-tier side Cordoba, which left the team winless in five matches and included a 4-1 defeat to 10-man Sevilla.

The former Tottenham and Real Madrid boss leaves the side in 11th place in the league table.

"Juande Ramos and the club have resolved in an amicable way the contract that brought together both parties - for this season and two more - and sealed the deal," Malaga said in a statement.

"Malaga would like to thank Juande Ramos for his work and honesty and wishes him all the best in the future in both his professional and personal life."
