Martin's Starting Stat

I'm heading to Southampton for their game against Manchester United on Friday night. I wonder how the Saints fans felt about five of their former players scoring in my first commentary game of the season between Arsenal and Liverpool? Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calum Chambers, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana were all on target and the home fans will hope two other former players - Luke Shaw and Morgan Schneiderlin - are not on target in front of the Sky Sports cameras this week.

Champions crash

Hi Martin. If Leicester lose v Arsenal this weekend would they be the first champions to lose their opening two matches? Stewart

MARTIN SAYS: When they lost to Hull, Leicester were the first champion side to lose their opening game since Arsenal in 1989/90. The Gunners lost 4-1 at Manchester United as champions - and I commentated on it for ITV - but I nearly didn't because my daughter, Jenny, was due to be born on that day. Happily she arrived eight days earlier.

The other two sides to do so were Aston Villa in 1981/82 (lost 1-0 to Notts County and 2-1 to Sunderland) and Leeds in 1974/75 (lost 3-0 to Stoke and 1-0 to QPR in the ill-fated Brian Clough reign).

Should Leicester lose to Arsenal and then lose their third league game of the season against Swansea as well, then they would be the first champions in history to suffer that fate.

Defoe's latest record

How many players have scored in more Premier League seasons than Jermain Defoe? DanSiv

Sunderland's Jermain Defoe celebrates

MARTIN SAYS: Jermain Defoe's goal against Manchester City means he has now scored in 16 Premier League seasons.

He is the eighth player to achieve that feat - only three players have scored in more Premier League seasons.

Those three are Ryan Giggs - who scored in 21 Premier League seasons - Paul Scholes (19 Premier League seasons) and Frank Lampard (18 Premier League seasons).

Four other players have scored in 16 Premier League seasons - those are Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey, Gary Speed and Chelsea's John Terry, who could score in his 17th season if he nets during this campaign.

McNair has a mare

How many people have scored own goals on their Premier League debut for a team? Jef

MARTIN SAYS: I assume you're asking this question after Paddy McNair scored at the wrong end in Sunderland's defeat against Manchester City.

Thanks to our friends at Opta, I can tell you that it's not as rare as you might think. He is the 12th player to score an own goal on debut in the Premier League, but the first to do so in five years.

The last player to do it was Danny Gabbidon on his QPR debut against Bolton - exactly five years to the day before McNair's own goal.

Here's the full list, which includes former Ipswich player Chris Swailes, who hit the headlines in May when he scored (at the right end) at Wembley for Morpeth Town at the age of 45.

The waiting game

If Alex Manninger plays for Liverpool, will he break the record for most time between PL appearances? Sally

MARTIN SAYS: Alex Manninger's last Premier League appearance came on May 19, 2001 when he played for Arsenal in a 3-2 defeat against Southampton. If he does play for Liverpool in the league this season it will be more than a 15-year gap between appearances, which will be a new record.

The record is currently held by Damien Delaney who ended a wait of 11 years and 155 days in between Premier League appearances when he played for Crystal Palace against Tottenham in August 2013.

His previous top-flight appearance came on March 16, 2002 when he played for Leicester in a 2-2 draw with Southampton.
