Team of the Week
Brad Guzan - Aston Villa
Aston Villa collected their first clean sheet in 27 Premier League outings on Saturday, as they shut out Norwich City at Carrow Road. American goalkeeper Guzan can take much of the credit for that success, as he denied Robert Snodgrass from the penalty spot when the scores were locked at 0-0. Libor Kozak went on to notch at the other end for Villa, as they returned to winning ways after three straight league defeats.
Branislav Ivanovic - Chelsea
Derby day success helped to put a few smiles back on the faces of those at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea seeing off local rivals Fulham on Saturday evening. Ivanovic helped Jose Mourinho's men to collect their first clean sheet in four - since holding Manchester United to a goalless draw on 26th August. The Serbian defender was also a constant menace going forward as the Blues prevailed 2-0 on home soil.
Dejan Lovren - Southampton
Lovren's arrival at Southampton over the summer may not have generated the same kind of interest as the Victor Wanyama and Pablo Osvaldos of this world, but it is worth nothing that it took £8.5m to secure his signature. That is a sizeable investment for any club, but looks like being money well spent as the Croatian put in another commanding display in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool - with his first goal in English football seeing the Saints to three points at Anfield.
Vincent Kompany - Manchester City
Manchester City's enviable array of attacking talent stole the show on derby day at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, but more on them later. The Blues were only in a position to provide such a threat going forward because their defence had the back door so firmly bolted. Club captain Kompany led by example once again for City, keeping Wayne Rooney quiet at one end and creating space at the other for Samir Nasri to net the Blues' fourth goal on a memorable afternoon.
Leighton Baines - Everton
Is there anybody better over a dead-ball at the moment in English football? Probably not. West Ham will certainly by ruing the fact that they gave Baines two opportunities to showcase his set-piece class at Upton Park on Saturday. The England international crashed home two spectacular 25-yard free-kicks, one in to each side of the goal, to help Everton respond to falling behind on two occasions to leave the capital with a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Sone Aluko - Hull City
Hull City have made a bright start to life back among the Premier League elite, taking seven points from their opening five fixtures - as many as reigning champions Manchester United. Aluko saw them to another three on Saturday, with his expertly-controlled volley, which cannoned in off the post, helping the Tigers to edge a five-goal thriller with Newcastle. Steve Bruce has now made the agreeing of fresh terms with the Nigeria international a top priority.
Mathieu Flamini - Arsenal
Arsene Wenger spent £42million to lure Mesut Ozil away from Real Madrid, and saw him involved in all three of Arsenal's goals in a 3-1 victory over Stoke, but the decision to re-sign Flamini as a free agent could prove to be as important a piece of transfer business for the Gunners. The Frenchman's experience and combative approach have added something different to an Arsenal midfield which has been accused of being a bit lightweight in the past.
Yaya Toure - Manchester City
Toure has netted six Premier League goals in each of his three seasons at Manchester City to date, but is already halfway towards equalling that tally less than two months into the current campaign. A third effort in 2013/14 arrived on Sunday, with the powerful midfielder - who appears to be back to his best - bundling home shortly before the interval against Manchester United to put City in complete control of a one-sided derby encounter.
Oscar - Chelsea
Chelsea's victory over west London rivals Fulham has already been discussed, with the Blues offering the perfect response to disappointing results at home and abroad. Jose Mourinho saw his decision to leave Juan Mata out of his matchday squad raise a few eyebrows, but Oscar is the playmaker the Portuguese coach has put his faith in, and he has not disappointed. His opener against Fulham may not have been a classic, but they all count and the Brazilian has now scored three times in seven outings this season.
Michu - Swansea City
Michu will have to go some to better his achievements from 2012/13, when he netted 22 times in his debut campaign for Swansea. The Spaniard has, however, offered an indication over recent weeks that he is firmly back on the goal trail. He found the target in a third successive game on Sunday as the Swans overcame Crystal Palace - with his opener inside two minutes at Selhurst Park paving the way for a 2-0 success.
Sergio Aguero - Manchester City
Aguero failed to break through the 20-goal barrier for just the second time in six seasons last term, but his early form suggests he is a serious contender for Golden Boot honours in 2013/14. The Argentine was Manchester United's chief tormentor on Sunday as they suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. Aguero broke the deadlock with a stunning volley and put City out of sight shortly after the interval as he was left all alone to turn home a cross from Alvaro Negredo.
