Best of the Weekend

Sky Sports casts an eye over the weekend's Premier League action and picks out some of the key highlights

We cast an eye over the weekend's Premier League action and pick out the highlights.

Player of the Weekend

Luis Suarez Liverpool striker Suarez scored his third hat-trick of the season in the 6-3 victory at Cardiff to keep his side four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand. Suarez drew Liverpool level at 1-1 with a simple finish from Glen Johnson's low cross into the box before making it 4-2 by sweeping home following Daniel Sturridge's clever back-heel. Suarez then returned the favour by setting up Sturridge to score before he rounded off the scoring by proving too strong for Juan Cala before taking his time to slip the ball past Cardiff keeper David Marshall. Martin Skrtel also impressed this weekend and the Liverpool centre-back now has more Premier League goals than Fernando Torres. Read our analysis.

Game of the Weekend

Cardiff 3 Liverpool 6 A topsy-turvy encounter at the Cardiff City Stadium saw a hat-trick, two players score a brace and defending that won't be featuring in any 'How to...' guides in the near future. Cardiff twice took the lead in the first half through Jordon Mutch and Fraizer Campbell, only to be pegged back by Suarez and Martin Skrtel goals. Skrtel put Liverpool in front for the first time early in the second half before Liverpool started to run away with it thanks to goals from Suarez and Sturridge. Mutch's second of the game briefly raised hopes of a grandstand finish before Suarez completed his hat-trick in added time.

Comeback of the Weekend

Tottenham Following back-to-back Premier League defeats by London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, and a Europa League exit at the hands of Benfica, Spurs would have been anxious for a positive start at home to Southampton. However, goals from Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana inside the opening half-hour put Southampton 2-0 up and raised the prospect of further questions to be asked of Tim Sherwood's future as manager. Christian Eriksen, though, quickly pulled one back and then equalised at the start of the second half before substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a stoppage-time winner to lift Spurs back up to fifth in the table. Tottenham embraced Tim Sherwood's dogged mentality to beat Southampton, says Dean Saunders. Click here.

Goal of the Weekend

Wayne Rooney Comparisons have been drawn with David Beckham's goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996 following Rooney's stunning effort in the Red Devils' 2-0 win at West Ham. Rooney may have got away with a little nudge on James Tomkins, but he took full advantage as his volley from just inside the West Ham half left keeper Adrian disorientated before bouncing into the net. It edges out Tettey as you don't see many goals scored from near the halfway line. After his stunner at West Ham, what has been Wayne Rooney's best goal? Have your say and vote.

Pass of the Weekend

Jordan Henderson Liverpool midfielder Henderson's energy has been a key factor in his team's title bid, but he demonstrated that he is more than just a willing runner in Saturday's 6-3 win at Cardiff. Trailing to an early Mutch goal, Henderson slipped a superb pass behind the Cardiff defence which had just the right pace on it for Glen Johnson to roll across for Suarez to equalise.

Screamer of the Weekend

Alexander Tettey Norway international midfielder Tettey finally scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday and it was well worth the wait. Tettey, who joined Norwich in the summer of 2012, produced a wonderful first-time volley from around 30 yards which dipped beyond the despairing dive of Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone to put the Canaries into a 2-0 lead.

Controversy of the Weekend

Andre Marriner What else could it be than the case of mistaken identity that saw Kieran Gibbs, rather than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, sent off in Arsenal's 6-0 thrashing by Chelsea. With Chelsea already leading 2-0, Oxlade-Chamberlain dived full length to tip away Eden Hazard's shot to leave referee Marriner with no choice but to award a penalty. Marriner then showed a red card to left-back Gibbs, despite Oxlade-Chamberlain's protestations that he was responsible. The red card is likely to be transferred, while Arsenal could have grounds to appeal it as Hazard's shot was heading wide and so Oxlade-Chamberlain was not preventing a goal. Did Arsenal's thrashing at Chelsea raise doubts over Arsene Wenger's future in his 100th game? Find out more with our conclusions from Stamford Bridge.

Skill of the Weekend

Daniel Sturridge The partnership between Liverpool strikers Suarez and Sturridge has been described as 'telepathic' by Glenn Hoddle following the combination which brought the fourth goal in the win at Cardiff. Johnson's low cross was only half-blocked by Cardiff and Sturridge reacted the quickest to produce a clever back-heel into the path of Suarez, who slotted in his second goal of the afternoon to give Liverpool a 4-2 lead.
