Alvaro Negredo: Guillem Balague chats to Manchester City's Spanish striker

Watch Guillem Balague's extended interview with Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo on Revista.

Last Updated: 06/11/13 11:51am

The 28-year-old joined City from Sevilla in a deal worth £20.6m this summer and has impressed up-front with Sergio Aguero - the pair have scored 12 goals between them in the Premier League already this season.

And Negredo, a former member of the Real Madrid academy, believes playing in England has helped his prospects of making Spain's 2014 World Cup squad.

He told Balague: "Man City is a club which attracts more attention, especially from the press. They already know me in the international set-up. I'm the same.

"I can improve my game a lot at Man City. That's why I came here. Perhaps Spain can look for qualities in me that I didn't have at Sevilla or that I'm trying to add to my game now."

Negredo's size and attributes as a traditional number nine appear to suit the physical style of the Premier League, and the Revista panel agreed that the competitive and battling nature in England will suit Negredo more than in La Liga, where the number nine role has become almost redundant.

Marcelino: "I definitely think he's more of a player for England than Spain. As a number nine you like to get crosses in to you and sometimes in Spain the wingers like to cut back and carry on. He receives more crosses in England and it's not just that he's a number nine, it's his attitude also; he's a fighter and his attitude is great.

"I've known him since his time at Real Madrid and I've always thought he was a player for England rather than Spain and I think he's doing great so far for Manchester City. There are a lot of good players there and he has strong competition, but I think he's playing at a level where everybody will be happy with him."

Guillem Balague: "In terms of his World Cup chances, it depends on how his season goes. Spain have an array of strikers in terms of choices, but what's interesting is that at Manchester City they feel Negredo is different to the other strikers.

"Edin Dzeko or Kun Aguero, for instance, like to be on the ball near the box, but Negredo can actually drop deeper and play with the ball a bit more. Aguero and Negredo will probably be the partnership for City in the big games, and if Negredo does well in the Premier League he has to be one of Spain's strikers."
