Best of Day 2

Sky Sports takes a detailed look at the drama and key incidents on day two of the 2010 World Cup.

Last Updated: 13/06/10 10:43pm

Every day during the World Cup, Sky Sports will take a detailed look at all the drama and key incidents in South Africa.

Jon Holmes looks at all the main moments as England get their campaign under way with a 1-1 draw against USA.

Highlight and Goal of the Day

Four minutes into England's campaign and the skipper is beating his chest, roaring with joy and all is well with the Three Lions. Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard combined neatly for a well-worked move, rounded off by the latter netting low past Tim Howard. In living rooms and pubs across the land, the nation truly believed. This time, more than any other time, this time...

Flop of the Day

IN-GER-LAAAAND! IN-GER-LAAA... what the.. you... (groans). Clint Dempsey tries a speculative effort from 25 yards that bobbles its way right into Rob Green's gloves, only for the goalkeeper to somehow redirect the ball over the line. The chants die down, enough to hear the faint sound of laughter from north of the border.

Clown of the Day

You may have thought Rob Green the obvious choice but my selection is the techie on the ITV HD late shift who managed to hit the wrong button just before Gerrard's goal. Our friends at Football365.com explain here

Confused Pundit's Corner

Katy Perry on James Corden's post-match show. An American who was sort of supporting England while wearing (perhaps in a gesture to viewers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) a tight-fitting Union Jack dress. Gordon Banks looked baffled but delighted at the same time.

Quote of the Day

Italy's injured playmaker Andrea Pirlo has never been the cheeriest-looking fellow, with his downturned mouth and droopy eyes. So when the midfielder was ruled out of the Azzurri's first two group games with a calf injury, his team-mate Gennaro Gattuso was asked to describe his mood.

"I've never seen him looking so sad," commented Gattuso. "Yes, he always has that face - but now it looks like he has taken a mallet."

Tell it like it is, Gennaro!

Save of the Day

Nigeria's Vincent Enyeama had a busy old afternoon against Argentina but it was one particular save from Lionel Messi that left me gobsmacked. It looked a certain goal when the little magician cut in from the right and sent a curler towards the top corner - but he hadn't reckoned for Enyeama, who twisted acrobatically and touched the effort over the bar, brilliant!

Maradona Watch!

Our first sighting of the great man on the sidelines in South Africa and he didn't disappoint. Waddling around looking like a bearded Danny DeVito from Twins, the Argentina coach turned to his bench and gave a few fist pumps as Gabby Heinze opened the scoring against Nigeria. He then went through a range of emotions as chances came and went but celebrated like his team had won the competition when the final whistle blew. Early days, but I still feel Diego has got plenty on lunatic moments left in his locker.

Final Conclusion

Due to the pressure of ongoing financial concerns, the Greek FA managed to negotiate a budget two-week all-inclusive deal in South Africa and have told the players they have absolutely no intention whatsoever of extending it.
