Louis Moult continued to haunt Hamilton as the striker's looping header sent Motherwell three points above Accies after a tense relegation battle at the SuperSeal Stadium.
Moult's sixth Lanarkshire derby goal of the season midway through the second half secured a 1-0 victory which moved Motherwell out of the play-off place and made them safe from the automatic drop with two games remaining.
There was little between the teams in a game which had 10 bookings but Moult once again proved the difference with his 18th goal of the season.
Kilmarnock pushed Inverness to the brink of relegation with an anxious 2-1 win at Rugby Park.
Goals either side of the break from Sean Longstaff and Jordan Jones sealed the Highland club's fate.
Alex Fisher created a few nervy moments for the home side when he netted on 70 minutes, but Killie did enough to hold out.

Ross County secured their survival as they halted Dundee's winning streak under Neil McCann with a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership at Dens Park.
Jim McIntyre's side only needed a point and Liam Boyce's fourth-minute opener put them ahead, but home captain Darren O'Dea equalised with a 76th-minute penalty.
It means County have erased any lingering threats about being dragged into a play-off while Dundee now find themselves five points ahead of second-bottom Hamilton.
Meanwhile, a first-half penalty from Danny Swanson was enough to hand St Johnstone a 1-0 victory over Partick Thistle.
Swanson netted from the spot after he was brought down by Niall Keown as the Perth club ground out a hard-fought win at home.
The win seals a third successive fourth-place finish for Saints and also a place in next season's Europa League.
