Oldham boss praises League One giant-killers

Oldham manager John Sheridan praised his giant-killing team after they secured a famous 1-0 victory over North-West rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round. A looping first-half injury-time goal by Gary McDonald helped the League One side beat their Premier League opponents at Goodison Park. A lacklustre Toffees could not reply, perhaps with this game coming one match too far after their fine recent run. Oldham defended resolutely throughout the game and the Toffees rarely troubled, with their best chance coming when substitute Yakubu hit the post deep into second-half injury time from a James McFadden head-down.

Chuffed

Welcoming the win, a delighted Sheridan told Sky Sports News: "We are all very excited, we are chuffed to bits and I am so proud of the players - that's seven games now we have won away from home. "To come to a place like Everton, who have been flying in the Premier League, and we have put up a great fight. "Everton caused us one or two problems and we rode our luck but togetherness of the team and the work-rate and blocking shots and what have you and we got our reward." He praised goal-scorer McDonald, saying: "I am pleased for Gary because he has been in and out of the team but people have come in today, young kids and one or two first games of the season and they have done very well for me."
