Moore hopes McGurk will kick on

Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore hopes international recognition can strengthen Adam McGurk's fragile confidence.

The Rovers forward is poised to make his Northern Ireland debut in a friendly against Malta on Wednesday night following a string of impressive displays for the League One leaders. McGurk came close to quitting the game due to a string of injuries in his youth at Aston Villa before earning a route back into professional football at Prenton Park two summers ago. Moore feels the 24-year-old is deserving of a call-up that could do wonders for his self-belief. "It's fantastic for him," Moore said. "He is one of them types, Adam - he's a deep thinker and a big worrier. "He's got to get out of those patches that he has sometimes and think more positive than negative because he can play, there's no doubt about that. "He's been fantastic for us. He's probably been our most consistent player away from Prenton Park and our crowd, I don't feel, have seen the best of him. "I think there's plenty to come from him but there's been a little section of the crowd at home who have had a little pop at him and he's just got to learn to win them over. "He'll win them over by doing the right things. Hopefully this call-up for Ireland, and hopefully he plays, will be just the kick that he needs to get him going."
