Decline of 11-a-side

The final part of Sky Sports News' special investigation looks at the rapid growth of five-a-side centres.

We investigate results of skysports.com poll on grassroots football

Do you still play 11-a-side football - or have you, like many, given it the boot? It's estimated that over 3,000 11-a-side teams have folded in the past three years across the UK. So as the Premier League builds to an exciting climax and a World Cup on the horizon, why have participation levels dropped? In recent weeks we've asked you to tell us your experiences and they've been central to our on-going investigation into the state of grassroots football in the UK Much of our research points to the fact that less people are turning out on Saturday and Sunday to play football, preferring to play at five-a-side centres in midweek instead. Our four-part series covers a whole range of subjects including a look at the state of 11-a-side facilities for the amateur player, the physiological and sociological benefits of five-a-side football and the measures that local leagues and football associations are taking to lure people back to the National Game. In our final report, many of the players we surveyed said they've switched their allegiance to five-a-side. So what can the traditional game learn from the shorter form of football?
