RB Leipzig stumbled in their pursuit of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Wolfsburg, while Freiburg climbed out of the bottom three by beating Borussia Monchengladbach.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's second-placed side went into Tuesday night's clash at the Volkswagen Arena aiming to make a dent in Bayern's eight-point advantage ahead of the winter break.
However, Leipzig had to settle for a draw, coming from behind to earn a point through defender Marcel Halstenberg's sliding finish seven minutes into the second half.
Wolfsburg had taken a 15th-minute lead when Paul Verhaegh calmly despatched a penalty after Ibrahima Konate had gone through the back of Mario Gomez in the six-yard box.
Bayern can further extend their advantage when they host bottom club Cologne on Wednesday night.
Leipzig finished the match with 10 men after centre-back Dayot Upamecano was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time for jumping with a raised arm in the face of Wolfsburg striker Victor Osimhen.
In Tuesday's other games, Freiburg made it back-to-back wins by seeing off Monchengladbach 1-0.
Freiburg had scored two late penalties as they came from 3-0 down to win 4-3 at Cologne last weekend, with Nils Petersen scoring both as part of a hat-trick.
Petersen was on target from the spot again, slotting in after 20 minutes, which proved enough to secure all three points.
New Borussia Dortmund head coach Peter Stoger saw his side triumph 2-0 at Mainz with second-half goals from defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and, in the final minute, Shinji Kagawa as they climbed up to fourth place.
Hamburg dropped into the bottom three after losing 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Kyriakos Papadopoulos gave the hosts a ninth-minute lead, but Frankfurt quickly hit back through Marius Wolf and then Mijat Gacinovic to turn the match around after 24 minutes and leave them level on points with Dortmund.
