Bayern Munich extended their perfect start to the Bundesliga to four games thanks to a 2-0 win at Schalke, who were beaten for the first time this season.
After a tense first half in which neither side dared take any risks, the game finally opened up when Toni Kroos broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.
Thomas Muller added a second for Bayern three minutes later and that was enough to give Jupp Heynckes' side the three points they needed to return to the top of the table, above Eintracht Frankfurt, with four wins from four.
Elsewhere, Hamburg picked up their first win of the season and brought an end to Borussia Dortmund's 31-game unbeaten streak with a 3-2 victory at the HSV Arena.
Hamburg took the lead in the second minute through Heung Min Son - Rafael van der Vaart the provider on his second home debut for the club - and they remained in front until the start of the second half when Ivan Perisic brought the defending champions level.
Ivo Ilicevic restored Hamburg's advantage in the 55th minute and Son's second of the game gave them a two-goal cushion, which they were only able to hold for 60 seconds before Perisic brought the Westphalians back into the game.
However, Dortmund could not find an equaliser, despite spending the last 20 minutes inside the Hamburg half, and had to taste defeat for the first time in almost a year.
Wolfsburg failed to win in front of their own fans once again as they were held 1-1 by a gritty Greuther Furth.
Emanuel Pogatetz gifted the visitors the lead with an own goal in the 27th minute, but Ivica Olic spared the Wolves' blushes three minutes before half-time.
Mainz picked up their first win of the Bundesliga season to leave opponents Augsburg in their wake and struggling towards the bottom of the table.
Andreas Ivanschitz gave Thomas Tuchel's side the lead in the 10th minute and an Adam Szalai goal a quarter of an hour later was enough to earn them all three points.
The day's other game between Fortuna Dusseldorf and Freiburg finished 0-0.
