Mats Hummels put the Bundesliga champions ahead in the 22nd minute and Marcel Schmelzer made it two 10 minutes later.

Mario Gotze added a third four minutes after the break and Julian Schieber added to the hosts' misery with a fourth in the 79th minute.

Aalen did finally have something to cheer, but Michael Klauss' 87th-minute effort was mere consolation.

Schalke continued their good form with a 3-0 home win over another second-tier side, Sandhausen.

Ibrahim Afellay scored the first after 11 minutes, with Ciprian Marica (62) and Klaas Jan Huntelaar (79) also finding the target.

Freiburg scored at either end of the match in a 2-0 win at Eintracht Braunschweig.

Daniel Caligiuri got the opener in the first minute and Johannes Flum sealed the victory six minutes from time.

Mainz were 2-0 winners at home to Erzgebirge Aue, Andreas Ivanschitz (18) and Yunus Malli (47) with the goals.

Augsburg won 1-0 at Preussen Munster thanks to a 69th-minute effort from Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker.

Elsewhere, 1860 Munich won 3-0 at Berliner AK, Bochum won 3-1 at TSV Havelse, while Cologne needed a penalty shootout to see off Wormatia Worms after the match ended goalless.
