Internazionale midfielder Dejan Stankovic has received a boost with the news he did not suffer a broken ankle against Palermo.
Stankovic was injured in the closing stages of the first half of Sunday's Serie A draw and was taken to hospital after being stretchered off with fears he had sustained a break.
But the initial examinations have shown ligament damage, which will rule the Serbia international out of Wednesday's clash with Genoa and this weekend's showdown against Juventus.
Further tests are required to determine how long Stankovic will be on the sidelines, but coach Roberto Mancini is already planning for his absence.
Mancini told Sky Italia: "Losing Stankovic means we lose an important player.
"We will have to see how long he will be sidelined for and we will have to find a replacement for a key player."
Inter have further concerns over goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who suffered a back injury in the 0-0 draw at Palermo.
With Francesco Toldo already on the treatment table, Inter could be forced to turn to third-choice Paolo Orlandoni if the Brazilian is ruled out.
