The Florida-born 18-year-old has lived in Germany since he was two and has dual nationality through his father and mother.
Having played for both Germany and USA at youth level, the winger was locked in a tug-of-war between the two nations.
But it has been confirmed that Green will be playing for the US from now on.
The news was revealed by America's coach Klinsmann, who confirmed via Twitter that he was 'delighted' to have secured Green.
Green, who is on the fringes of Bayern's first-team and has made his debut on the Champions League, is now expected to make a late push for a World Cup place.
Green trained with Klinsmann's squad ahead of their recently friendly with Ukraine and that appears to have tipped the balance in their favour.
"A big part of the decision was the experience I had in Frankfurt. All the players were super nice and welcomed me from the beginning," said Green.
"Clint Dempsey gave me a jersey with my name on it, and the way they supported me gave me a lot of belief. The coaches have shown a lot of trust in me, and now I hope to do everything I can to earn a spot on the World Cup roster."
Green should be eligible to play for USA ahead of their friendly with Mexico in April.
