Midfielder now free to discuss permanent move to Grimsby

Leeds United midfielder Peter Sweeney has left Elland Road after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. Sweeney made just nine appearances for the League One club following his arrival from Stoke City in January 2008 and did not feature at all last season. He finished the campaign on loan at Grimsby Town and Mariners boss Mike Newell is keen to sign the 24-year-old on a permanent basis. Whites manager Simon Grayson has now opened up the possibility of Sweeney returning to Blundell Park after agreeing to release the Scot. "Sweens is at the stage of his career where he needs to play regular football and I can't guarantee him that here," Grayson told the club's official website. "He goes with our best wishes."
