QPR run rings round Potters

QUEENS PARK RANGERS boosted their playoff prospects with an impressive 4-0 win over Port Vale at Loftus Road, whilst Oldham won thanks to a last-gasp strike though fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City continued their poor run.

Rangers were unlucky not to be ahead before the break, but were, shortly after, when Danny Shittu (pictured) stabbed home. Paul Furlong doubled The Hoops advantage before late strikes from Gino Padula and Kevin Gallen sealed an impressive performance.

Bristol City lost further ground on the leading pack, and extended their recent league run to no wins in eight, following a 2-0 away defeat to Notts County.

Following a scrappy first half, Mark Stallard fired the home side ahead from the penalty spot. The Magpies sealed the win when Paul Heffernan headed home after 67 minutes.

Oldham moved level with Cardiff, and maintained their unbeaten away record, following a late 2-1 win over Lancashire rivals Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

Paul Murray fired the visitors ahead with a deflected shot, though Jon Daly equalised moments after the break before David Eyres stole the points with the last kick of the game.

Blackpool kept up the pace with Rangers, and secured an 11th straight win, following a tight contest against Brentford with John Murphy netting the only goal of the game after 27 minutes.

Luton emerged with the three points against Northampton at Kenilworth Road in a thrilling 3-2 affair.

Daryl Burgess headed the visitors ahead on 23 minutes, though The Hatters were level minutes later when Paul Hughes fired into the corner of the net.

Kevin Nicholls put the home side ahead just before the hour mark though Richard Johnson levelled matters on his debut from the penalty spot, however Paul Hughes scored his second and settled the game with minutes remaining.

Cheltenham remained rooted at the foot of the table following a 3-3 away draw at Huddersfield, though Bobby Gould will feel aggrieved his side failed to scoop all three points.

The Robins opened a two-goal lead thanks to first-half strikes from Grant McCann and Julian Alsop, though the contest turned on its head in the second half.

Three goals in just five minutes from Kenny Irons and two from top scorer Martin Smith put The Terriers ahead, however McCann netted his second on 71 minutes and rescued a point for the visitors.

A solitary Simon Howarth goal was enough to give Tranmere all three points away to Plymouth, whilst strikes from Keith Ryan, Dannie Bulman and Craig Faulconbridge earned Wycombe a win away to Swindon.

Barnsley boosted their prospects of avoiding the drop following a come-from-behind 2-1 home win over Chesterfield.

Chris Brandon put the visitors ahead though goals from Rory Fallon and Bruce Dyer handed The Tykes the initiative. The Spireites finished with 10 men following the late dismissal of Steve Blatherwick.
