Boss still keen to keep Rooney

Image: Hessenthaler: Wants to renegotiate

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler hopes the Gills can still reach an agreement with Luke Rooney over a new contract.

The midfielder has been excluded from Gills' matchday squad since the end of last month having rejected what Hessenthaler described at the time as "a very good offer". Rooney and his agent are understood to have met with chairman Paul Scally on Tuesday to talk about a way out of the stalemate and although no progress is believed to have been made just yet, Hessenthaler is keeping his fingers crossed. "We believe we have offered him a good deal. Is there room for negotiation? I am sure there is," Hessenthaler told KentOnline. "If we can come to an agreement as soon as possible then we can get Luke playing again and back in the squad and start enjoying his football again. "We need everyone available again and it is not helping him or us so let's hope we can reach an agreement."
