Robin van Persie was on target as Holland began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a win over Turkey in Group D while Romania were also victorious and Hungary thrashed Andorra.
Van Persie continued his clinical form as his early header helped Holland overcome Turkey 2-0.
The Dutch Manchester United striker, who bagged a hat-trick at Southampton on Sunday, took just 16 minutes to find the net - nodding home a Wesley Sneijder corner.
Turkey threw men forward in search of an equaliser and paid the penalty three minutes into injury time when Luciano Narsingh ensured three points for the hosts.
Second-half goals by Gabriel Torje and Ciprian Marica lifted Romania to a solid 2-0 victory over Estonia in their World Cup qualifier in Tallinn.
Torje opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second period and Marica made it two in the 75th minute as Victor Piturca's men made a perfect start to their Group D campaign.
Elsewhere in Group D, Hungary helped themselves to a 5-0 win over minnows Andorra, with West Bromwich Albion forward Zoltan Gera netting a penalty.
