Rotherham defender Richard Wood has made a one-month loan switch to Sky Bet League 1 club Fleetwood.

The 30-year-old, who includes Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry among his former clubs, is yet to appear for the Millers this term and spent part of last season in the third tier with Crawley.

"We've spoken about not bringing loans through the door this season because we want to promote from within, but if there's an ingredient in the team that we haven't got then we have to bring it in, and Richard gives us that," Cod Army boss Graham Alexander explained on his club's official website.

"He's a player I've admired for a long, long time and originally spoke to him two years ago about bringing him in as a permanent player.

"He had options in the Championship which we could understand but he's someone I've always kept an eye on.

"He's not been in the picture recently at Rotherham and we think he can add to the quality we have in our squad.

"We know we've got a top pro on our hands so he'll go straight into the squad for Saturday's game, and I'm sure he'll give us the effect we're looking for."

Wood added: "I'm just looking forward to playing now and getting some match time under my belt.

"It's been frustrating not being involved at Rotherham but this is an ideal opportunity for me now for a month at Fleetwood."

Millers boss Steve Evans agreed that regular football is the best thing for Wood.

"I am delighted that Richard has taken the opportunity to get some first-team football," he said.

"He is a top-class professional and needs to be playing and he gets a great opportunity to do that with Andy Pilley's Fleetwood Town."
