Striker close to first-team return after knee injury

Crystal Palace striker Calvin Andrew hopes to prove he deserves a new contract after returning to fitness following a serious knee injury. Andrew underwent an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in the summer after picking up the injury on the final day of last season while on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion. He featured in a practice match for Palace earlier this week and is close to forcing his way back into Neil Warnock's plans. The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is eager to build on his solitary Championship start for the club since his arrival from Luton Town in 2008. "That was my first time with the gaffer and the first-team lads and it went fine. I was a bit nervous at first, coming back from such a long-term injury, but it was brilliant," said Andrew "I'm about a month or two ahead of schedule. You have to be careful, but I'm happy to be back. "Going into the last year of my contract and knowing I've not got long left to prove a point to get a new contract has been mentally very tough. "I've still got a point to prove at this club and hopefully over the remaining months of the season I can do that."
