Manchester United

A combination of injuries and their most-talented players means United's goalkeeper and defenders pretty much pick themselves. David de Gea will be in goal behind the seasoned and talented centre-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Patrice Evra will add further experience at left-back. Fabio started at right-back against Crystal Palace and, with his brother, Rafael, and Phil Jones not fully fit, is a contender to face City. But Chris Smalling started in the Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen and was superb to mean he has played himself into the first XI for the derby. The classy Michael Carrick will remain as one of the two central midfielders alongside Marouane Fellaini, who showed what he could do against Leverkusen. Anderson was in the first team in place of Tom Cleverley against Palace but manager David Moyes will want a bit more presence in the centre of the pitch. Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, who has been at the centre of another diving controversy, are Moyes' preferred wingers for their work-rate in big games in his trio of attacking midfielders. This should not change against City, which means Shinji Kagawa will have to drop back to the bench while it would be too big a gamble to start Adnan Januzaj in a derby. Wayne Rooney, still in a deep-sitting attacking role, will play through the middle fresh from scoring his 200th goal for United. Robin van Persie is United's obvious selection as the lone striker after the Dutchman's goal against Leverkusen became his ninth of the season for club and country. Van Persie will also have fond memories of the Etihad Stadium after scoring the dramatic winner against City last season. What do you make of the team we have picked? Will Moyes have similar ideas or are some of our selections way off the mark? Let us know your thoughts and pick your own United side for the derby by filling in the feedback form below.
