Southampton 2-1 Newcastle United – October 24th 1993

Southampton were cut adrift in the relegation zone after just one win all season and Matt Le Tissier had been controversially dropped by Ian Branfoot following concerns over his work rate, but ‘Le God’, as he was affectionately known by Saints fans, conjured up not one, but two moments of magic that will forever be remembered in Hampshire.

With the game still goalless after an hour, Le Tissier picked up Iain Dowie’s knockdown with a deft flick of his left heel before gently nudging it past the oncoming Barry Venison with his right foot. He then chipped it over the head of Kevin Scott before confidently dispatching a perfectly-timed half volley past goalkeeper Mike Hooper to give the hosts the lead.

Andy Cole equalised for the Magpies but Le Tissier wasn’t done there and in the 88th minute, he nonchalantly controlled Neil Maddison’s cushioned header with his thigh before sending a sensational volley into the top corner from 30 yards out.

Matt’s favourite moment

"Barry Venison kind of committed himself and I just flicked it past him. Kevin Scott, I think, was the other defender. He also committed himself and I managed to flick it over his head and spin around him as well.

"I just got to the ball just on the half volley and I thought: 'Well this is great, nice side foot into the bottom corner, happy days.'

"I think that game was a huge turning point in my career.

"Obviously, the fact that it was live on Sky made a huge difference because it meant that the whole country kind of saw what I could do."
