Neil McCann welcomes prospect of video technology trials in Scotland

Former Rangers midfielder Neil McCann has welcomed the prospect of video technology trials coming to Scotland but believes there are some decisions that not even repeated replays would be able to resolve.

The Scottish Cup could trial the technology next season after football's law-makers agreed in principle to increase the use of replays.

The International Football Association Board is proposing to experiment with further video assistance for officials in four key areas: contentious goals, penalty decisions, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan is willing to let Scottish football act as a guinea pig, but McCann still has some reservations.

He told Sky Sports Now: "I think there is a place for it in clear cut things it's going to be easy but in situations where there is bit of dubiety, it's still going to come down to one man's decision.

"There's going to be occasions when it comes down to a personal opinion, so I think there could still be trouble there as regards video evidence. But in things like the Andy Halliday incident (during Rangers v Hibernian game) that are clear cut, blatant dives or handballs then I think we should start to look at it.

"It does have a big bearing on so many matches and the riches that are involved in football, particularly the English Premier League, are huge so I think it's about time we looked at it but I don't think it's going to be easy, problems are still going to arise."

Sky Sports pundit Neil McCann previews this weekend's Scottish Cup action

McCann is not convinced it would benefit Scottish football to act in isolation as a testing ground, but is willing to see trials go ahead for the good of the game.

He said: "We'd like to get on board once all the trials have been done but I suppose they have to trial it and we have to test it out in certain countries. If they are trying it out here in Scotland then that it something we would have to deal with but I would like to get it when it has totally been agreed and everybody is going to use it at the same time.

"I think over the years Scottish football has tried some wierd and wonderful things within the game and if Stewart Regan wants to bring it to our game, then lets have a look at it.  As I said, I think it is needed in a lot of cases just to clear things up but I don't think it is the be all and end all."
