'The biggest test in football'

Having been to World Cups as a player, Gary Neville is now preparing for a finals as an England coach. The Sky Sports expert clearly knows a thing or two about the tournament as a result and here he exclusively tells us why he loves the World Cup...

Step inside England's coaching set up as Sky Sports' very own Gary Neville tells us what the World Cup means to him.

Having already been to past tournaments as a player, the former Manchester United full-back clearly knows a thing or two about the greatest international competition in sport and has some eventful memories...

I love the World Cup because....

"It is the biggest tournament in the World, the best challenge, and you are tested every four days. It is players coming together for their countries. It is the biggest test in football."

My World Cup hero is...

"Zico after watching him in 1982 was unbelievable. You grow up as a local boy in Manchester, you play on muddy pitches, it is cold and everything seems tough. The games are tough, they are physical; and then you go and watch a player like Zico who is playing this carefree, wonderful skilful sport and it presents a different outlook on football. "He was just incredibly talented, and to watch him in that Brazil shirt in the 1982 World Cup always stands out. It is one of my childhood memories that stands with me. Zico and Brazil captured everyone's imagination and, even though they did not go on to win it, they played utopian football."

The greatest World Cup match I have seen is...

"Yet to come! It is going to be this summer for England. I genuinely believe the squad can go out there and put in some real performances for the fans."

The World Cup newcomer I tip to be a top player is...

"I hope, one of our young English players. The likes of Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere, these are the lads that I hope at this World Cup are going to prove how good they are."

My first World Cup memory is...

"Watching England and Bryan Robson scoring that goal against France in Spain in 1982. Robson was my hero at the time. He was the best player, and the most important player, in the country. Every single challenge he went in for was as if his life seemed to depend on it. He seemed as though he cared all the time, he was a huge driving force for his country and his club."

The best World Cup game I ever played in was...

"Against Colombia in 1998. We beat them to get through to the next phase and it was enjoyable. I enjoyed the games against Argentina and Portugal in terms of the games and they were great challenges, but we got beaten, and you cannot enjoy getting knocked out."
