McKay and Thornton on target for play-off hopefuls

Second-half goals from Billy McKay and substitute Kevin Thornton kept Northampton's play-off hopes alive with a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury at Sixfields. Following three straight defeats, Northampton had to win to stay in contention and they dominated for most of the contest. They created most of the chances in the first-half with Liam Davis twice going close while Andy Holt had a header cleared off the line by Kelvin Langmead from Ryan Gilligan's corner. Steve Leslie twice went close for Shrewsbury and Benjamin van den Broek tested Jason Steele. But McKay finally broke the deadlock nine minutes after the restart, Adebayo Akinfenwa pulled the ball back for his fellow striker to grab his eighth goal of the season with a low drive. The closest Shrewsbury came to an equaliser was in the 61st minute when Holt hit the ball against his own bar while trying to deal with a cross from Jake Simpson. But Thornton made sure of the points in the 82nd minute with a curling 20-yarder from the angle of the box, his first for Northampton. A minute later McKay hit the post after racing onto Thornton's pass but the points were already in the bag.
