Dnipro claim narrow win in Europa League opener

A first-half goal from Ruslan Rotan was all that separated Dnipro from Romanian hosts Pandurii Targu-Jiu in Europa League Group E. Rotan struck after 37 minutes as the Ukrainian outfit opened their group campaign with three points. The game was 10 minutes old before Dnipro's Yevgen Konoplianka saw his free-kick come back off the wall. Constantino Erico and Bogdan Ungurusan were booked in quick succession as the Romanian outfit struggled to cope with the visitors. Dnipro's Rotan was also cautioned for fouling Erico as the home side began to come back into the contest. But Rotan redeemed himself after 37 minutes as he gave his side the lead when he scored with a close-range shot following a Yevgen Konoplianka corner. Dnipro could have extended their lead just before half-time but when Artem Fedetskiy shot from distance keeper Razvan Stanca was able to make a comfortable save. Dnipro went in search of a second goal but when they forced a corner Konoplianka's flag kick was cleared by Paraskevas Christou. Pandurii Targu-Jiu's Admir Adrovic was booked for handling the ball but Dnipro were unable to create anything from the resulting free-kick. Nascimento Matheus was off target with a shot as the visitors looked to stretch their slender lead. The home side's Paul Anton was then booked for dissent before Dnipro's Alexandru Vlad carved out an opening but when his cross found Roman Zozulya his right-footed shot from the right side of the area failed to breach the home side's defences. But Dnipro had done enough to take all three points back to the Ukraine.
