Charlton's young guns seized their moment in the Capital One Cup spotlight to breeze to a 4-1 victory at Peterborough.

Addicks boss Guy Luzon picked a team including six Academy graduates for the second round tie at the ABAX Stadium and they did not disappoint to continue the club's unbeaten start to the campaign.

Debutant Mikhail Kennedy grabbed a gift-wrapped opener and earned the spot-kick which was converted by fellow teenager Karlan Ahearne-Grant to double the lead early in the second period.

Substitute Ahmed Kashi added a stunning first goal in English football and fellow replacement Igor Vetokele emphasised their dominance with a late fourth before Posh finally found the net.

Kennedy certainly will not forget the opening moments of his debut in a hurry and it is unlikely the Northern Ireland Under-19 international will ever be presented with a simpler chance to score.

He pounced from inside the six-yard box to punish a blunder from Posh goalkeeper Ben Alnwick who had got his handling of a right-wing cross from another of the Addicks' Academy graduates, Regan Charles-Cook, horribly wrong.

It was a nightmare start to a first home game as skipper for Alnwick who was handed the armband at the weekend after previous skipper Michael Bostwick relinquished the role.

Charlton could have had the contest won by the break as the League One hosts had no answer to their high-speed approach play.

Alnwick needed two attempts to grab an Ahearne-Grant drive before Callum Harriott failed to make the most of a glorious headed chance.

That was to become a familiar theme with Harriott squandering several decent openings and he was not alone in doing so. Captain Jordan Cousins also curled over after Peterborough had been undone by a rapid counter-attack and Zakarya Bergdich volleyed wildly off-target.

The hosts posed little threat in the opening period. Marcus Maddison, the scorer of four goals already this season, flashed a low drive just wide before wideman Jon Taylor darted inside to blast across the face of goal.

It appeared to be only a matter of time until Charlton struck again and that moment arrived eight minutes into the second half. Kennedy was scythed down by Alex Davey and Ahearne-Grant did the honours from the spot to score for the second successive round in this competition.

Maddison was a whisker away from an immediate reply, but it was all about the Addicks from then on. They played with freedom and flair - qualities which summed up substitute Kashi's cracker after 76 minutes.

The Algerian international launched an incredible effort past Alnwick from fully 40 yards before Vetokele guided in a fine cross from another debutant, Ollie Muldoon, with four minutes to go.

Posh did claim a consolation from Jermaine Anderson's stoppage-time header, but this was Charlton's night.
