Montpellier withstood a second-half rally from Reims to continue their strong start to 2014 in Ligue 1.

Montpellier withstood a second-half rally from Reims to continue their strong start to 2014 which has seen them pull away from trouble in Ligue 1. After going 3-0 up Montpellier conceded twice in the space of eight minutes to give the hosts hope, but moments after conceding the second they scored a fourth to wrap up a 4-2 win which extends their unbeaten run to five games. Remy Cabella's brace was bookended by strikes from Joris Marveaux and M'Biaye Niang while Floyd Ayite got the first back for Reims before an Abdelhamid El Kaoutari own goal. Gaetan Courtet headed over early on for Reims but Montpellier otherwise dominated the first half. Cabella saw a shot charged down by Kossi Agassa before Anthony Mounier went through one-on-one only to be denied by the goalkeeper. They made the breakthrough in the 28th minute when Mounier cut in from the left before laying the ball off for Marveaux to fire a fine shot under the crossbar. After Geoffrey Jourdren coolly denied Gaetan Charbonnier Montpellier took a 1-0 lead in at half-time. They extended almost immediately after the restart as Cabella pounced on sloppy play from Mohamed Fofana and slotted the ball past Agassa. It might have been three two minutes later but Agassa made a fine save to keep out Jonas Martin's powerful effort. But as it was they did not need to wait much longer as Cabella made it 3-0 in the 55th minute, again capitalising on a defensive mistake to beat Agassa with a lob. Reims replied three minutes later when Atila Turan crossed for Ayite to fire in a volley which caught Jourdren flat-footed. The hosts looked to be back in the game when El Kaoatari tried the nod the ball back to Jourdren only to clear him and find the net in the 66th minute, but hope was short-lived for the home fans as, three minutes later, Cabella's cross picked out Niang unmarked and he made no mistake.
