Krisztian Nemeth struck a first-half goal to fire RKC Waalwijk to a 1-0 victory over Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie on Friday evening. Nemeth netted in the 37th minute to secure three points for the hosts in a drab match at the Mandemakers Stadion. Neither side had offered anything as an attacking threat in the first half before Nemeth struck eight minutes before the break with the first incisive move of the match. Robert Braber's shot following a scramble in the area was saved by Vitesse goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen but Nemeth pounced, shooting into the bottom right-hand corner from just outside the six-yard box. The visitors had a good chance to level four minutes later when Renato Ibarra went one on one with the goalkeeper but his shot deflected off Jeroen Zoet and onto the bar.

Nicky Hofs then shot narrowly wide for Vitesse a minute before half-time as Vitesse, seeking to move up to seventh in the table, hunted an equaliser. Considering the visitors had come close before the break it was expected they would have continued in the same vein in the second half. However, neither side showed any attacking intent or produced any clear-cut chances after the interval and it took until four minutes from time for a shot on goal when Wilfried Bony's attempt was easily saved by home keeper Zoet. Vitesse substitute Mart Lieder shot over the bar in injury time but the three points belonged to the hosts and they moved to within four points of their opponents in mid-table.
